United Hebrew Congregation (UH), founded in 1837, is a vibrant, welcoming, inclusive Reform Jewish congregation, serving 850+ families from a suburban St. Louis campus. UH operates an onsite full day year-round early childhood center, a supplementary K-12 religious and Hebrew school, and a Jewish cemetery in University City, MO.

Summary:
United Hebrew Congregation seeks a dynamic and innovative Senior Director of Business Operations to oversee its financial and business activities. This position works in partnership with the Senior Rabbi and the Senior Director of Congregational Life to fulfill the organization’s mission and vision, with special emphasis on serving the Congregation in a warm, friendly and helpful manner. Reporting to the Congregation President, and working with the Treasurer and Board of Trustees, this position is fulltime, and has supervisory authority for financial operations and building management personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities:
This is a key leadership position, interacting closely with all levels of staff and lay leaders to ensure that the organization operates effectively to deliver upon the mission of United Hebrew Congregation.

Finances

  • Supervise one Bookkeeper
  • Oversee budget process with Congregation Treasurer
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable, reporting, budgeting, cash flow, control, and planning
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of accounting records and budget performance by monthly budget vs. actual analyses
  • Oversee annual Membership Commitment collection and financial relief in both commitments and school scholarships
  • Field inquiries from congregants about their accounts, answering their questions accurately, completely, and in a manner that is welcoming, warm, and easy to understand
  • Supervise the fundraising activities of the congregation
  • Manage the finances and property records of UH Cemetery, as well as some oversight of the caretaker home, in collaboration with the Cemetery Committee and Cemetery Director
  • Co-supervise Cemetery Director with Cemetery Committee
  • Oversee the management of the UH Gift Shop, including one part time employee
  • Explore and implement alternative revenue generating sources
  • Write grants, as appropriate, and oversee fulfillment of terms and reporting requirements
  • Attend evening meetings 2-4x/month of the Board of Trustees and relevant lay led committees
  • Perform ad hoc duties deemed necessary by the Congregation President and/or Senior Rabbi

Building & Operations

  • Supervise one Facilities Manager
  • Oversee building insurance policies and renewals
  • Assist in the development and ongoing updates of maintenance and capital equipment repair and replacement plans, building safety protocols and business continuity plans
  • Contract with vendors, negotiate terms of service, regularly assess quality of services received and price/quality ratio
  • Manage technology for the congregation, which includes negotiating contracts for IT services, office supplies, internet, phone service, etc.
  • Manage building security
  • Oversee building rentals, including contracts and staffing

Human Resources

  • Oversee employee benefits including health, dental & vision insurance, retirement, and long-term disability
  • Arrange for background checks on prospective new employees
  • Approve payroll
  • Maintain accurate employee records, including employment agreements
  • Maintain procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 5+ years as manager/director in a finance/operations function; with supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office and QuickBooks (or similar) accounting software
  • Experience with ShulCloud or other data base or web-based technology
  • Demonstrated experience managing financial records, accounting, and budget processes
  • A self-starter and finisher with the ability to meet deadlines; demonstrated ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities; ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Congenial, professional and positive attitude interacting with coworkers and congregants

Compensation:
Salary $70,000 - $80,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
